Quiénes no deberían tomar vitamina C y por qué
Aunque tiene una buena reputación, su consumo excesivo puede provocar complicaciones de salud; los casos en los que es considerada un riesgo para el organismo

La vitamina C o un ácido ascórbico es un nutriente que el cuerpo necesita para formar vasos sanguíneos, cartílagos, músculos y colágeno en los huesos, también ayuda al proceso de curación y es una antioxidante que protege las células contra los efectos radicales libres, así lo explica el sitio de la Clínica Mayo.
Esta vitamina fortalece el sistema inmunológico y previene algunas enfermedades respiratorias, pero aunque contiene muchos beneficios, hay personas que no la pueden consumir, porque puede ser perjudicial para su salud.
“Obtener suficiente cantidad de esta vitamina es especialmente importante para mantener un sistema inmunológico saludable, también desempeña un papel crucial en la cicatrización de heridas, en mantener los huesos fuertes y en mejorar la función cerebral”, dice Healthline.
Aunque se considera que es segura, en ciertas condiciones de salud limitan o desaconsejan su ingesta, para así evitar complicaciones, por eso es importante que las personas conozcan cuáles pueden llevar a ser sus efectos secundarios.
La vitamina C es segura en cantidades moderadas y un consumo por encima de los 2.000 mg al día puede llegar a provocar efectos secundarios como malestar gastrointestinal, diarrea, o incluso cálculos renales.
“Los efectos secundarios serios a causa de demasiada vitamina C son muy infrecuentes porque el cuerpo no puede almacenar dicha vitamina. Sin embargo, no se recomiendan cantidades superiores a 2000 mg/día. Las dosis tan altas pueden llevar a malestar estomacal y diarrea, y en pocas ocasiones a piedras en los riñones. Las dosis altas de suplementos de vitamina C no se recomiendan durante el embarazo”, así lo comenta MedlinePlus.
Aunque este es un fenómeno poco común debido a que el cuerpo no la puede almacenar, pero eso no quiere decir que no deba tener en cuenta la cantidad que se consume al día.
Muchas personas se preguntan cuál es la dosis recomendada y eso depende, ya que esta puede variar según la edad, el sexo y las condiciones de salud. En adultos, lo más recomendado es de 75 mg en mujeres y 90 mg para hombres, así lo señala la Clínica Mayo.
Antes de iniciar con cualquier suplementación es fundamental consultar con su médico, especialmente si padece alguna condición de salud o toma medicamentos de forma regular.
