Power Mac G5, de Apple
La computación de 64 bits llega al escritorio del usuario común
Apple presentó su nueva generación de equipos de escritorio, la Power Mac G5, que ofrece una innovación en el mundo de la computación personal: es la primera con un procesador de 64 bits.
Aunque por pocos días no es el primer sistema de escritorio a 64 bits (el 4 de junio último la empresa Boxx Technologies lanzó su serie M4 con dos AMD de 64 bits), Apple la presenta como una computadora personal y no como una estación de trabajo. El precio base de la G5 es de 2000 dólares (en los Estados Unidos), un valor que la coloca por debajo de algunos equipos de 32 bits y bien por debajo del precio de una estación de trabajo.
El lanzamiento marca un antes y un después en la historia de la informática personal, poniendo al alcance del usuario común el poder de cómputo enorme (ver recuadro) y el primer salto cuántico tecnológico desde que Intel lanzó el primer microprocesador de 32 bits para PC, en 1985.
El despegue de la G5 no estará, sin embargo, libre de escollos. Por ahora, y hasta fin de año, no habrá un sistema operativo capaz de aprovechar la arquitectura de 64 bits, y aunque las aplicaciones existentes corren -según Apple- en forma nativa, llevará un tiempo hasta que el amplio repertorio de programas de la plataforma, actualmente escrito en 32 bits, migre por entero a 64 bits.
La G5 por dentro
La nueva serie de máquinas de escritorio de Apple viene en tres configuraciones.
- La más potente posee dos microprocesadores a 2 GHz (GigaHertz o miles de millones de ciclos por segundo), dos bus frontales a 1 GHz, 512 MB de RAM (que pueden llevarse a 8 GB), disco duro de 160 GB Serial ATA y el dispositivo de Apple que sirve para grabar CD y DVD, llama-do SuperDrive. El precio en los Estados Unidos de este equipo es de 3000 dólares.
- La configuración con un solo procesador a 1,8 GHz alcanza los 2400 dólares.
- El equipo más económico, con un procesador a 1,6 GHz, bus a 800 MHz, 256 de RAM y disco de 80 GB, arranca en los 2000 dólares. Los precios son, en todos los casos, los que corresponden al mercado norteamericano.
Por supuesto, como es normal en Apple, el diseño juega un papel importante. La cubierta de la G5 es de aluminio, similar a los modelos G4, con una especie de grilla frontal y un nuevo sistema de enfriamiento, que hace al equipo más silencioso que sus predecesores. Igual que en las versiones previas, el acceso al interior para la actualización o agregado de componentes se realiza a través de una sola palanca.
Todos los modelos incluyen una placa aceleradora de gráficos que puede ser la ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (en las dos configuraciones más potentes), o la Nvidia GeForceFX 5200 (en la inferior). Incluye dos puertos FireWire 400, placa de red Ethernet y tres puertos USB 2.0. Soporta dos monitores y el trabajo con redes inalámbricas por medio de AirPort. También está preparada para la tecnología inalámbrica Bluetooth.
Una Apple con motor IBM
El procesador que utiliza la nueva G5 es un desarrollo conjunto entre Apple e IBM, basado en la arquitectura Power. Se trata, como se mencionó, del primero en llevar la tecnología de 64 bits a las computadoras de escritorio.
"Integra un gran número de avances tecnológicos que mejorarán el desempeño de cualquier aplicación -dice Manny Cernuda, ejecutivo para el desarrollo de negocios de Apple para América latina y el Caribe-. Por ejemplo, es posible trabajar con vastas cantidades de memoria y desempeñar operaciones complejas."
La versión más alta del procesador trabaja a una velocidad de reloj de 2 GHz, ofrece computación paralela masiva para 215 instrucciones en simultáneo, multiprocesamiento simétrico, doble precisión para operaciones matemáticas de alta complejidad y un Velocity Engine, motor acelerador que ya venía en la G4, que ha sido optimizado.
Cuando un procesador de 32 bits trabaja con números con coma flotante, debe dividir los cálculos en diferentes piezas, que toman múltiples caminos dentro del procesador. ¿El resultado? Un desempeño menor. En cambio, "la PowerPC G5 puede realizar cálculos en una increíble variable de decimales a velocidades anteriormente desconocidas en la plataforma Macintosh", concluye Cernuda.
Apple no duda en denominar a su G5 como "la computadora personal más rápida del mundo" y difundió algunas evaluaciones independientes, como la SPEC CPU 2000, que comparó el nuevo equipo con una Pentium 4 de 3 GHz y con sistemas basados en Xeon de 3,06 GHz. La Power Mac G5 ganó tres de las cuatro pruebas y demostró ser un 21% más veloz que una PC Pentium 4 de 3 GHz sobre la base de una prueba que mide el desempeño simple del procesador.
Pero, ¿para qué sirve?
Cada salto tecnológico abre también algunas dudas. En el caso de la G5 de 64 bits, la primera pregunta que surge es cuándo estarán disponibles las aplicaciones que aprovechen al máximo todo su potencial.
Por lo pronto, Apple se aseguró en informar que cualquier programa de 32 bits del mercado funcionará en esta nueva plataforma de manera nativa y sin inconvenientes. "Esto implica que, de movida, el software existente aprovecha la mayor velocidad en GHz, la máxima cantidad posible de memoria y la rapidez de ésta", explica Héctor Goldín, experto en Mac, presidente de la empresa Maxim Software, y primer argentino invitado como orador a una edición de la prestigiosa conferencia MacWorld.
Durante el lanzamiento de la G5, en la reciente Conferencia Mundial de Desarrolladores de Apple, en San Francisco, Estados Unidos, estuvieron presentes los fabricantes de software que históricamente han hecho productos para la plataforma, como Adobe, Macromedia, Digidesign, Alias/Wavefront y Wolfram. Pero lo cierto es que, más allá de declaraciones amables de ocasión, el único anuncio concreto lo hizo Adobe, que prometió "un plug-in que estará disponible junto con el equipo y que permitirá que el Photoshop sea el doble de rápido en una G5 que en las máquinas anteriores", según recuerda Goldín.
La otra pregunta importante relacionada con esta nueva arquitectura es si realmente existen usuarios que necesiten, en este momento, semejante poder de procesamiento. Para Cernuda, los campos de aplicación son "la creación de audio o de contenidos 3D, las áreas de diseño e impresión, y el análisis científico".
Goldín agrega otro rubro: "Los usuarios de Unix tienen en Mac OS X una nueva alternativa, y con la G5 pueden lograr rendimientos del nivel de supercomputadoras". Lo cierto es que es muy probable que una buena cantidad de usuarios de Mac utilicen la potencia del nuevo equipo y empleen una G5 como servidor de equipos más pequeños.
Se estima que la línea G5 esté disponible en la Argentina a partir de septiembre, a un valor de base de alrededor de 3300 dólares.
Una fiera
Como complemento del lanzamiento de la G5, Apple anunció también una nueva versión del sistema operativo, el Mac OS X versión 10.3 (conocido con el nombre de Panther ), que aprovechará la arquitectura de 64 bits. Sin embargo, no estará disponible hasta fin de año, por lo que los primeros compradores de G5 tendrán que conformarse con la versión anterior, la 10.2.
El Panther presenta un buscador renovado, con un diseño que hace más sencillo el acceso a todos los discos y carpetas. También ofrece una búsqueda dinámica en redes, que permite encontrar cosas independientemente de que se trate de un equipo con Mac OS, Windows o Unix.
Por otra parte, el sistema operativo incluye nuevas características que facilitan la coexistencia entre redes Mac y Windows, incluyendo una red privada virtual basada en el protocolo seguro IPSec, soporte para ActiveDirectory y directorios basados en Windows. "Gracias al OS X, la plataforma aprovecha mejor las cualidades del nuevo hardware -explica Goldín-. Muchas de las ventajas de performance de estos equipos se derivan del multiprocesamiento interno que realizan". El experto especifica que "con la versión 9, cada desarrollador tenía que ocuparse de estudiar cómo aprovechar el equipo, pero ahora, usando las herramientas nativas, todas las aplicaciones reciben las ventajas".
Por que 64 no es el doble de 32
"La arquitectura de 64 bits beneficia a los usuarios de dos maneras: mayor capacidad de memoria principal y computación de avanzada." Así explica Manny Cernuda cuál es la principal diferencia que tiene la nueva arquitectura con sus predecesoras. "Muchas personas, generalmente, creen que la diferencia entre 32 bits y 64 bits es el doble de la velocidad en el procesamiento de la información. Pero en verdad, la diferencia es exponencial", añade.
En términos de memoria, un procesador de 32 bits puede acceder hasta 4 GB de RAM, un límite que ya está a la vista en los equipos de escritorio. Un procesador de 64 bits no controla dos veces esa cantidad, sino 4300 millones de veces más memoria. Esto representa un total de 18 exabytes, o 18 trillones de bytes. Ese límite, por ahora, está más allá incluso de nuestra imaginación.
