Gran Hermano: basado en hechos reales
En el año 2000, Stephen King –uno de los escritores más vendidos y populares del siglo XX– publicó una mezcla de memorias con manual del oficio (Mientras escribo). Allí desliza la siguiente frase: “No quiero hablar despectivamente de mi generación. Pero tuvimos la oportunidad de cambiar el mundo y preferimos hacer las compras telefónicas”. Podría reemplazarse hoy por compras online.
La cita abre el más reciente libro de la escritora francesa Delphine de Vigan, consagrada durante la última década por su filo para la observación aguda y una primera persona potente en el borde autobiográfico gracias a Días sin hambre, Nada se opone a la noche y Basada en hechos reales (que tiene versión cinematográfica de Roman Polanski).
Ahora, en Los reyes de la casa (Anagrama, 2022; Les enfants sont rois, en el original francés) usa esa frase de King para deslizarse hacia tópicos dominantes de una manera más directa: los reality shows, la intimidad, las redes sociales, la mirada ajena, la fama, sobre los que despliega un drama policial.
El inicio de la trama es el 5 de julio de 2001, cuando se emitió en Francia la final del reality show Loft Story, pero podría ser la de la primera edición del local y hoy omnipresente Gran Hermano, cuya primera temporada finalizó seis días antes, el 30 de junio del mismo año. Su vigencia en la exitosa versión GH 22 es cristalina.
“Sí, ahí fue donde todo empezó”, enfatiza Delhpine de Vigan al comienzo de su novela: “La voluntad de ser visto, de ser admirado. Se acabó la necesidad de construir, de crear, de inventar para tener nuestros quince minutos de fama. La llegada de nuevos soportes acelerará el fenómeno, nuestras propias imágenes, comentarios, huellas. Internet y las redes sociales no tardarían en tomar el relevo de la televisión y ampliar las posibilidades. La telerrealidad y sus variantes van imponiendo sus códigos, su vocabulario y sus modos narrativos. Tal vez fue a lo largo de aquellas semanas que todo empezó”.
Para De Vigan, son los años que van desde esa sorpresa de vidas ajenas vistas desde la comodidad de un sillón a los detalles minuciosos que se encierran en una historia de Instagram. Para la TV argentina y su rating, lo que va de Marcelo, Tamara y Gastón (protagonistas del primer envío hace dos décadas) a Alfa, Thiago y la Tora convertidos en tema de charla por sus modismos, estrategias, hábitos y elucubraciones. La ingeniería social puesta en primer plano como estrategia de supervivencia en un laboratorio lúdico exacerbado por cientos de miles de televidentes que toman partido.
Para Mélanie, una de las protagonistas de la novela de De Vigan, esa vida televisiva proyectada, ese show montado sobre la realidad, es el espejo que adaptó en perfiles de YouTube sobre la crianza de sus hijos devenidos popularísimos influencers. La enseñanza sobre crear un video mirando a cámara para abrir una caja de regalo y transmitir la sorpresa con la máxima espontaneidad parece tener continuidad en la mirada frontal al lente del Gran Hermano en el momento de las nominaciones: convicción y autenticidad en modo selfie.
A fin de 2022, las listas de libros más vendidos daban cuenta de otra vigencia: 1984, el libro de George Orwell escrito en 1949 que desarrollaba la idea totalitaria de un “big brother” que todo controla inspirada en la KGB de Stalin tuvo un auge en la Rusia de Putin tras la invasión a Ucrania. Es una actualidad más cruenta que la de la adaptación televisiva de John de Mol para convertir ese artefacto de control en un juego de morbo, fama y popularidad mediática.
No es para nada curioso que sea De Vigan la que insinúe la continuidad y las posibilidades de la narrativa personal. La cita es explícita: una de las protagonistas recibe 1984 como regalo que marca su adolescencia. Los límites de la autoficción, la literatura del yo, el relato autobiográfico convertido en virtud literaria en las últimas dos décadas la tienen como una de sus protagonistas. La exposición de esas vicisitudes y miserias propias en un texto literario es el reverso del foco orwelliano: elegimos voluntariamente ponernos en foco de manera permanente; convertimos nuestra vida, nuestra realidad en un juego o en una narración. En lugar de cambiar el mundo, elegimos contar nuestra propia historia o producir nuestras stories. O mirarlas frente a las pantallas de las redes sociales o de la TV.
