La escala sismológica de Richter, también conocida como escala de magnitud local, se utilizó por mucho tiempo para medir justamente la magnitud de un sismo. Fue establecida en 1935 por el sismólogo Charles Francis Richter y su colega Beno Gutenberg. Sin embargo, en el siglo XXI se reemplazó, porque originalmente había sido creada para medir temblores débiles. Al momento de calcular la magnitud de un movimiento telúrico más intenso, no puede diferenciar todos los terremotos más grandes y los interpreta como similares.
En la actualidad, su sucesora es la escala sismológica de magnitud de momento, que se introdujo por Thomas C. Hanks y Hiroo Kanamori en 1979. Esta coincide y continúa con los parámetros de la escala de Richter, pero sirve para medir la energía liberada en terremotos de magnitudes superiores a 6,9, que es el punto en que empieza a falla la anterior.
Otra forma de medir los sismos es con la escala Mercalli Modificada (MM), que tiene doce grados expresados en números romanos (I al XII). Esta permite medir su intensidad (no magnitud) y los efectos que provoca el terremoto, que dependen de las condiciones del terreno, la vulnerabilidad de las construcciones y la distancia epicentral. El Instituto Nacional de Prevención Sísmica de la Argentina suele usarla para describir cómo el sismo afectó al terreno en que ocurrió, enfocado en las construcciones y las personas presentes allí.

Un sismo o terremoto es un movimiento brusco de la tierra causado por la liberación repentina de energía dentro de la misma. La causa más común de este fenómeno natural es el movimiento de las placas tectónicas, por lo que es común en zonas de fallas porque estas chocan o se deslizan entre sí. Esta fricción genera una tensión inmensa entre las placas que al liberarse produce vibraciones masivas, llamadas ondas sísmicas. Estas se trasladan a través de la roca y hacia la superficie.

- Mantener la calma: Correr o gritar solo puede aumentar el riesgo de lesiones.
- Agacharse, cubrirse y agarrarse: Si se está en un edificio, es importante buscar un lugar seguro debajo de un escritorio o mesa. Si se está al aire libre, hay que encontrar un lugar alto y alejado de edificios o árboles.
- No usar el ascensor: dado que estos pueden quedar atrapados o caer durante un temblor.
- Si se está en un automóvil: hay que detenerse y salir del vehículo. También se debe alejar de edificios, árboles y postes de luz.

El Instituto Nacional de Prevención Sísmica (SSN) les recomienda a quienes se encuentren dentro de un auto al momento de producirse un sismo, detenerse y salir del vehículo hacia un lugar seguro. Además, es importante mantenerse alejado de edificios, árboles y postes de luz.
