Se subió a un crucero y descubrió un secreto familiar
Eileen Monaghan encontró a unos primos desconocidos durante unas vacaciones; después de años de pensar que no tenía más parientes, la vida le dio una sorpresa

Una mujer descubrió que tenía familia en Irlanda, en medio de un crucero al que se embarcó junto con su esposo para celebrar su cumpleaños. Ambos viven en Estados Unidos, pero ella había cultivado sus raíces irlandesas a través de las historias que le contaba su abuela y cuando visitaba a la única prima que le quedaba allí. Cuando esta falleció, perdió todo contacto con ese país, pero el destino le dio una sorpresa mientras viajaba.
Eileen y Gerard Monaghan suelen viajar en todo el mundo y aprovechaban su paso por el continente europeo para llegar a Shalvey, en Donegal, Irlanda. Según contaron para CNN Travel, allí vivía la prima Nora, quien solía recibirlos antes de su fallecimiento, en 2014.
Al año siguiente, todavía conmovidos por la muerte de Nora, los esposos decidieron abordar un crucero para celebrar el cumpleaños 70 de Eileen, sin imaginar que todo cambiaría. Una noche, mientras ella se preparaba en su camarote para la cena, su esposo estaba en el ascensor, donde se encontró con un par de irlandeses que le llamaron la atención por su acento. “¿De dónde eres?”, le preguntó Gerard al hombre, quien le dijo que vivía en el norte de Irlanda.
Con esta referencia en común, no pudo evitar hablar sobre Nora y le contó a ese desconocido que tanto él como su esposa solían viajar a ese país. “La familia de mi esposa es de Shalvey”. La conversación siguió y el sujeto le respondió: “Yo tenía una prima en Shalvey, pero murió el año pasado”. Con las sospechas, Monaghan no pudo evitar la pregunta, mencionó el nombre “Nora” y así fue que descubrieron que los unía algo más que el viaje en el ascensor.
Paddy y Hazel McEvoy, la pareja irlandesa, arregló una salida para conversar sobre el vínculo. En una cena descubrieron que Eileen y Paddy eran primos lejanos. “Mi esposa solo decía que era una pena que no tuviera familia a bordo con quien celebrar, pero ahora la tiene”, destacó Gerard. Ese día se conocieron y tuvieron una larga charla, que los unió para siempre.
Una familia inseparable
Después de ese primer cruce en el barco, los primos perdidos ahora se visitan con frecuencia. Además, ambas parejas tienen hijos en Boston, así que este es su punto de encuentro. Por otro lado, los Monaghan han invitado a sus nuevos familiares a visitarlos en Connecticut, donde viven. Al mismo tiempo, los McEvoy los reciben en Irlanda. “Hemos sido amigos desde entonces y ahora cruzamos el Atlántico regularmente para vernos”, comentó Eileen a CNN Travel.
A partir de ese momento se convirtieron en la familia que Eileen pensó que había perdido con el fallecimiento de Nora. “Realmente significa mucho que los hayamos encontrado; cuán afortunados somos de conocerlos”, remarcó.
