En octubre de 2022, el costo de la categoría básica pasó de US$45 a US$50, mientras que la membresía Plus aumentó de US$100 a US$110 dólares. Este ajuste representó el primero en nueve años para la compañía.
En comparación, Costco, por lo general, revisa sus tarifas cada cinco años. Aunque hubo una excepción: ya que pasaron más de siete años sin hacer cambios. En junio de 2017 aumentó el precio de su membresía básica de US$55 a US$60, y la membresía ejecutiva subió de US$110 a US$120. Recién ahora, a partir del 1 de septiembre, los precios en Costco se incrementarán otra vez, con la básica que pasará a US$65 y la ejecutiva a US130 anuales.
Esto sugiere que, desde una perspectiva financiera, Sam’s Club brinda una opción más económica. Al optar por Sam’s Club, es posible ahorrar 15 dólares en la membresía básica o 20 dólares en la Plus, diferencias que resultan considerables para hogares con un presupuesto ajustado.
Conveniencia y preferencias personales: el argumento de Costco
Aunque el precio es un factor relevante, no es el único a considerar. La ubicación y conveniencia de las tiendas también desempeñan un papel importante. En el caso de tener un Costco más cercano o más accesible, esto podría justificar la diferencia en el costo de la membresía. La facilidad de acceso facilita el uso frecuente de los beneficios del club, lo que mejora la relación costo-beneficio de la inversión.
Otro aspecto relevante son las preferencias personales en cuanto a los productos disponibles. Por ejemplo, la panadería de Costco podría ser más atractiva en comparación con la de Sam’s Club. Además la variedad de sus productos podría alinearse mejor con ciertas necesidades y permitirles cubrir un mayor número de artículos en la lista de compras.
En síntesis, aunque Sam’s Club se presenta como una opción más económica, es fundamental evaluar la conveniencia de acceso al club mayorista y si la oferta de productos satisface las expectativas. Al tomar una decisión, es recomendable considerar tanto el costo como la comodidad.
Si se dispone de acceso similar a ambas tiendas y sus inventarios son equivalentes, lo lógico sería inclinarse por Sam’s Club para obtener un mayor ahorro. Sin embargo, si la cercanía de un Costco es un factor determinante, entonces la diferencia de costo podría ser un gasto justificado.
