ONU condena "violento asesinato" de atleta ugandesa Rebecca Cheptegei
Naciones Unidas condenó enérgicamente este jueves la horripilante muerte de la atleta olímpica ugandesa Rebecca Cheptegei después de que ésta sucumbiera a las graves quemaduras infligidas por su novio.
"Nos unimos al Fondo de Población de las Naciones Unidas y a ONU Mujeres para condenar enérgicamente su violento asesinato", dijo Stephane Dujarric, portavoz del secretario general de la ONU, Antonio Guterres.
Recordó que "la violencia de género es una de las violaciones de los derechos humanos más frecuentes en el mundo y debe ser tratada como tal".
Cheptegei, la corredora de largas distancias de 33 años que acababa de hacer su debut olímpico en los recientes Juegos de París, fue rociada con gasolina por su pareja el domingo y prendida fuego.
El médico que la trataba en el oeste de Kenia dijo que murió el jueves por la mañana a causa de las graves quemaduras.
"Cada 11 minutos en promedio, una mujer o una menor es asesinada por su pareja íntima o un miembro de la familia en algún lugar del mundo", resaltó Dujarric a los periodistas, citando cifras de la ONU.
"Por supuesto, creemos que la cifra real es mucho mayor", dijo.
