La ciudad de EE.UU. que ofrece refugio a los migrantes y prohíbe preguntar acerca del estatus legal

Mientras estados como Texas y Florida continúan su cruzada antiinmigrantes, aprobando una serie de leyes que permiten detener y castigar a los indocumentados, una ciudad de Pensilvania ha decidido tomar un rumbo totalmente contrario. Recientemente, aprobó algunas medidas con la intención de apoyar a esta población.
Las autoridades de Lancaster, Pensilvania, han aprobado políticas que les permitirán limitar su cooperación con las autoridades federales de inmigración. El consejo de la ciudad, conformado únicamente por demócratas, aprobó por unanimidad una orden que impide a la policía local, y a cualquier otro funcionario de la urbe, cuestionar sobre el estatus migratorio de una persona.
Con base en lo anterior, a menos que sea requerido por la ley estatal o federal, o bien bajo una orden judicial, las personas no tendrán por qué responder con respecto a su situación migratoria. Contrario a lo que sucede en estados como Florida, en donde las autoridades están obligadas a averiguar ese dato.
Asimismo, se prohíbe proporcionar cualquier información al Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) que pudiera llevar a acciones civiles o no penales relacionadas con la ley de inmigración.
La intención con esa política es lograr que Lancaster continúe siendo una ciudad en donde los inmigrantes, los solicitantes de asilo y los refugiados puedan sentirse seguros y tengan acceso a servicios públicos. Además de poder denunciar cualquier delito que se cometa en su contra.
Sobre la iniciativa, Jaime Arroyo, vicepresidente del consejo de Lancaster, dijo al medio NBC, que las medidas no pondrán en peligro la seguridad de nadie, pues la policía seguirá cooperando con ICE si es necesario.
Ley de confianza, la medida en pro de los inmigrantes
Las iniciativas apoyadas por Lancaster se basan en la llamada Ley de confianza o Trust Act que permite a los residentes, independientemente de su estatus migratorio, poder transitar sin miedo y utilizar los servicios públicos para sus familias.
Diversas organizaciones en pro de los derechos de los inmigrantes se han manifestado a favor de esa ley, señalando que muchos indocumentados han expresado preocupación ante la posibilidad de tener un contacto con la policía, temiendo que sus familias pudieran ser separadas.
Lancaster es un ejemplo del apoyo a la ley. Quienes la impulsan consideran que cualquier persona, sin importar su estatus, merece seguridad, protección y refugio. No obstante, las autoridades aclararon que no son una ciudad santuario, sino únicamente acogedora.
Finalmente, cabe decir que, de acuerdo con el medio Telemundo, en Lancaster, 40% de la población se identifica como hispana e incluso alrededor del 11% no habla bien inglés.
