Licencia de conducir y tarjeta de identificación gratis en Georgia: quiénes pueden tramitarla

El Departamento de Servicios al Conductor (DDS, por sus siglas en inglés) de Georgia es la agencia encargada de emitir y procesar las licencias de conducir y tarjetas de identificación. En su mayoría, estos documentos tienen un costo, pero existen algunas excepciones para ciertos residentes, que pueden pedrilas gratis si cumplen con requisitos especiales.
Quiénes pueden obtener una licencia o ID gratis en Georgia
En Georgia, los veteranos que cumplan con ciertos requisitos pueden obtener sin cargo una licencia de conducir o ID, la cual llevará impreso el símbolo de la bandera estadounidense. Para tramitarla deben presentar sus documentos de separación de las Fuerzas Armadas (DD-214) o un Certificado de elegibilidad (DS-516B) del Departamento de Servicios para Veteranos del estado.
El cónyuge de un veterano separado del servicio que esté discapacitado o el sobreviviente de un fallecido (que no se haya vuelto a casar) tiene derecho a la misma licencia de conducir disponible para el veterano, sin cargo. También aplica para la identificación y es conocida como de “veterano honorario”. El solicitante debe presentar un Certificado de elegibilidad original (DS-516B).
Los exmiembros de la Guardia Nacional de Georgia o de las fuerzas de reserva, que tengan 20 o más años de servicio acreditable, tienen derecho a una licencia de veterano gratuita. Para conseguirla, deberán presentar un documento de certificación que indique la elegibilidad. Lo mismo ocurre con los miembros que se encuentre en regla y tengan el Certificado de elegibilidad (DS-318B), que debe ser firmado por el comandante local y llevado a cualquier Centro de Servicio al Cliente para que se emita el permiso de conductor. La licencia de conducir para los integrantes acreditados de la Guardia Nacional de Georgia es renovable durante el tiempo en actividad o hasta que se hayan obtenido 20 años de servicio que le den derecho a una de veterano.
Cómo solicitar una licencia de conducir y una ID para veteranos
Respecto de los requerimientos básicos para la licencia de conducir y ID, los solicitantes deben tener servicio activo honorable en las Fuerzas Armadas de EE.UU. o 20 años de servicio en la Guardia Nacional. Todos deben ser residentes de Georgia al momento de la solicitud. Las separaciones/bajas aceptables que califican para obtener la credencial son honorable y médico.
Los veteranos que reúnan los requisitos deben presentar documentos de separación de las Fuerzas Armadas (DD-214) o un certificado DS-516B, además de documentación que compruebe su identidad, dirección residencial y ciudadanía estadounidense o prueba de estatus legal, así como también proporcionar su número de Seguro Social completo en el formulario de licencia/identificación/permiso en línea requerido.
¿Cómo obtener una tarjeta de identificación de veterano honorario?
El solicitante debe ser cónyuge de un veterano discapacitado y separado honorablemente de las Fuerzas Armadas de EE.UU. que no tenga licencia de conducir o sobreviviente soltero de un veterano fallecido y separado honorablemente. Debe ser residente del estado de Georgia al momento de la solicitud y presentar un certificado de elegibilidad, aprobado por el Departamento de Servicios para Veteranos del estado, junto con los Documentos de separación de las Fuerzas Armadas de su cónyuge (DD-214).
Asimismo, debe entregar documentación que demuestre su identidad, dirección residencial y ciudadanía estadounidense o prueba de estatus legal en Estados Unidos, además de proporcionar su número de Seguro Social completo en el formulario en línea.
