The Rapture es "una banda llena de bateristas frustrados", dice el verdadero baterista, Vito Roccoforte. Y el cantante y guitarrista Luke Jenner, quien en 1998 comenzó con un grupo de dance punk en Nueva York, es el más frustrado de todos.
TACHO Y BOMBO A los 17 años, Jenner quería tanto ser baterista que entró en guerra con sus padres. Ellos no querían tanto ruido en su hogar de San Diego. Entonces, Jenner tomó prestado un equipo de un amigo, lo armó en su dormitorio y trabó la puerta. "No salí por dos días", dice Jenner, de 31 años. "Ellos gritaban y golpeaban la puerta cuando yo tocaba. Finalmente, dijeron: «Sos lo suficientemente grande como para irte. O te deshacés de la batería o te vas»." Jenner aprendió guitarra. "Pero el modo en que tocaba era muy percusivo, muchos acordes fragmentados", dice, sentado en el backstage de un estudio en Nueva York. Cuando habla y cuando canta, Jenner se preocupa por el ritmo. El single indie que la banda editó en 2002, "House of Jealous Lovers", los volvió grupo de culto con apenas ¡un disco! Es básicamente Jenner aullando el título de la canción sobre un ritmo de pasos de ganso que sigue un cencerro. "Ahí estoy tratando de ser parte del ritmo, en vez de cantar la melodía", dice. "Ese es el baterista frustrado que hay en mí."
DICHA EN MOVIMIENTO Para ser unos devotos del ritmo, se quedaron demasiado quietos entre sus discos. Pieces of the People We Love (2006) es su segundo álbum, y llega tres años después de Echoes, el debut producido por el dúo disco futurista Tim Goldsworthy- James Murphy, The DFA. Echoes los colocó en la primera línea del rock, pero ahora se están poniendo al día con el multitudinario revival new wave liderado por The Killers y Franz Ferdinand (quienes abrieron para The Rapture en su gira británica en 2004). Roccoforte, de 31 años, dice que cuando el oscuro y esquelético Echoes salió, pensó que "era un álbum pop". No fue así. Pieces of the People We Love, ya sin dfa, es más inmediato en su tono brilloso. "Es un disco más completo", dice el bajista Mattie Safer, reconociendo las capas de percusión y la electrónica en "Don Gon Do It", "The Sound" y el tema del título (una de las dos canciones de producida por Danger Mouse). "Pero no es tanto el tiempo que nos tomamos sino el modo en que nos movimos en ese tiempo."
FAMILIA Y PROPIEDAD The Rapture es una banda de lazos. Safer, quien se unió a The Rapture a fines de 1999, y (el saxo y teclado) Gabe Andruzzi, de 31, quien pronto lo siguió, son primos segundos, de Washington, D.C. Jenner y Roccoforte se conocieron en la escuela en San Diego y desde entonces son inseparables. Cuando Roccoforte se mudó a San Francisco para estudiar en la escuela de cine, Jenner se fue con él, y consiguió empleo en una disquería. Allí formaron The Rapture y emigraron... primero a Seattle y luego a Nueva York. El y Jenner dejaron siete miembros en el camino, incluyendo uno que falleció en Seattle. "Solíamos tomar muchas drogas", dice Jenner secamente. "Durante dos minutos su corazón dejó de latir, y luego regresó a la vida. Fue igual a Spinal Tap."
The Rapture se presenta el 15 de noviembre en el Gran Rex.
