Allee Willis, ganadora de dos premios Grammy y coautora del tema "I'll be there for you" de la serie Friends, murió de un paro cardíaco este martes a los 72 años.
"I'll Be There For You", el hit que Willis coescribió para la banda The Rembrandts, se convirtió en una de las canciones de televisión más reconocidas de todos los tiempos. También coescribió los éxitos "September" (1978), y "Boogie Wonderland" (1979), para el grupo estadounidense Earth, Wind & Fire.
En 2018, Willis fue incluida en el Salón de la Fama de Compositores (SHOF) y fue esta organización que al enterarse de la triste noticia difundió el fallecimiento de la autora en sus redes sociales.

Paradoja
Willis nació y creció en Detroit, en el norte de los Estados Unidos, sede del legendario sello discográfico Motown. De niña visitaba los estudios de grabación cada fin de semana, según le contó al The New York Times en 2018. "Se podía escuchar a través de las paredes, y así es como me convertí en compositora", había comentado.
A pesar de escribir la letra y la música de un catálogo de éxitos, Willis nunca aprendió a leer o tocar música. "Escucho melodías constantemente", había dicho al NYT.
Premios
Estudió periodismo en la Universidad de Wisconsin y en 1969 se mudó a Nueva York, donde consiguió trabajo de redactora en Columbia y Epic Records. En 1972, incursionó en la música y la composición de canciones.
Ganó dos premios Grammy, uno por Neutron Dance, la banda sonora de la película Beverly Hills Cop, de 1984; y otro por el musical The Color Purple, estrenado en Broadway en 2005.
En 1995 fue nominada a un Emmy por "I'll Be There for You", que había coescrito como una breve cortina musical para Friends y que luego se amplió a una canción completa. Pero "Voyager", el tema musical de Star Trek, ganó el Emmy ese año.
Grandes fiestas
Willis era amante del kitsch y llevaba un corte de pelo largo por un lado y corto por el otro. Vivía en una casa rosada en Los Ángeles conocida como Willis Wonderland (como guiño a su éxito "Boogie Wonderland"), en la que organizaba grandes fiestas y coleccionaba los objetos kitsch que había ido reuniendo a lo largo de su carrera.
Cuando Taylor Swift lanzó un cover de "September" en 2018, Willis dijo que estaba "emocionada", aunque describió la versión como "tan letárgica como una tortuga borracha dormitando bajo un girasol después de ingerir una botella de Valium".
Su compañera, Prudence Fenton, anunció en Instagram la partida de Willis. "Descansa en Boogie Wonderland", escribió la madrugada del miércoles.
