El programa quiere ser el Sex & the City para hombres
Desde hace años, la televisión norteamericana esta tratando de encontrar un Sex & the City para hombres. Love Monkey (algo así como "con síndrome de abstinencia de amor") es una nueva comedia que va tras ese elusivo grial. Como S&TC, Love... cuenta la tortuosa búsqueda de la pareja ideal para un grupo de amigos que viven en la gran ciudad. El éxito de S&TC no sólo se recuesta sobre su insight de la versión femenina del amor y la pareja, sino, principalmente, sobre el mundo de fantasía en el que vive su protagonista, un lugar en el que una redactora de revista puede llevar una existencia infinitamente glamorosa, recargada de fiestas y celebridades. Carrie Bradshaw es mucho más que una mujer en busca del amor: es una mujer en busca del amor que nunca deja de parecer cool. Por eso, en Love... Tom Farrell (Tom Cavanagh) tiene uno de los cinco trabajos ideales listados por el protagonista de Alta fidelidad: es A&R en un sello discográfico, es decir, la persona encargada de descubrir a los nuevos The Strokes. Como en Alta fidelidad, Tom habla de grupos y discos con sus amigos y hace compilados caseros para las chicas. La música pop es, al mismo tiempo, su consejera y una ocasional metáfora de sus relaciones. Además de las canciones en la banda sonora o tocadas por bandas creadas ad hoc, futuras emisiones prometen la presencia de músicos como Aimee Mann, Lisa Loeb y James Blunt. Igualmente, aquí la inclusión del mundo discográfico es todo menos cool. En el primer episodio, Tom lleva a su protegido, el singer-songwriter Wayne, a un peregrinaje iniciático por Nueva York en el que pasan por el obligatorio Chelsea Hotel y el frecuentado callejón donde Dylan hizo la foto para The Freewheelin’... En vez de intentar descubrir algo nuevo, Tom, y el programa, quedan anclados en "valores" que perciben en la música del pasado y realizan discursos tan retrógrados como llenos de clisés, en defensa de la autenticidad rockera y de preservar la pureza de las bandas frente a los embates del "sistema". Al mismo tiempo, Wayne, el músico "de verdad" a cuya carrera apuesta Tom, es un cantante de baladas con cara de angelito y guitarra acústica que cualquier sello lanzaría para el mercado femenino adolescente. Una banda nueva y neoyorquina como LCD Soundsystem no computa. Pero, a pesar de que su punto de vista sobre la música pop es muy fácil de desestimar, Love...ejerce una insistente seducción: nos lleva por los reductos del Village en busca de discos y bandas de rock, menciona y pone en la banda sonora a grupos que no suelen aparecer en televisión; y, después de todo, ser A&R para un sello indie de Nueva York es un trabajo de ensueño.
