La incomparable Hildegarde
Faltaban menos de seis meses para que Hildegarde -"La incomparable Hildegarde", como era obligatorio anunciarla- cumpliera cien años, un caso único de longevidad en la música popular que la acercaba cada vez más al récord de supervivencia de Irving Berlin, para quien había trabajado como pianista en la década del 20 del siglo pasado, que superó los ciento uno.
No pudo ser, porque esa distinguida mujer, insuperable para protagonizar veladas de grandes canciones y cantarlas acompañándose al piano en ambientes que se volvían exclusivos por su sola presencia, murió hace diez días en un geriátrico de Nueva York, la ciudad que durante medio siglo la tuvo como figura imprescindible de cuanto club o restaurante nocturno pretendiera aparentar cierto nivel.

Mucho antes de Maysa, Cher, Tormenta o Madonna, Hildegarde fue la primera cantante en el continente americano que se hizo famosa usando un solo nombre, recurso que debe de haber copiado a Damia, Fréhel y otras trágicas del realismo francés en la década del 30, cuando se repartía gloriosamente entre París y Londres sin pensar en un retorno a Manhattan, donde se recicló a comienzos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial como una estrella europea de nacionalidad tan indeterminada como su acento.
Lo notable es que la sofisticada artista que antes de los treinta años actuaba en bodas reales y coronaciones, tenía obsesionado al rey Gustavo de Suecia y aparecía en la tapa de la revista Life cuando eso importaba era en realidad una simple campesina norteamericana criada en Milwaukee que apenas sabía tocar el piano cuando escapó con una compañía de variedades y probablemente no hubiera llegado a mucho sin Anna Sosenko, la hija de una dueña de pensión con aspiraciones de compositora que la diseñó como si se tratara de un maniquí art-deco -"la hice sensacional antes de que fuera una sensación", contaba-, le escribió "Darling, je vous aime beaucoup", el tema con el que quedó identificada, y vivió con ella una larga y complicada relación sentimental.
Desde el punto de vista musical, Hildegarde no era una cantante fuera de lo común, y, aunque podía intercalar sin vacilaciones algún fragmento de Rachmaninoff, tampoco deslumbraba su manera de tocar el piano, pero la intuición para emplear los tiempos rítmicos exactos, una expresión inteligente y lánguida de los versos y la capacidad para hacer que cualquier cosa sonara digna y elevada, lograban convencer de que se estaba ante una artista superior.
Además, tenía un extraordinario criterio para elegir temas -"I´ll be seeing you", "Mi corazón canta" y "La última vez que vi París" fueron inicialmente creaciones suyas- y organizarlos con sentido teatral, alternando estándares norteamericanos con títulos internacionales cantados parcialmente en el idioma original y amenizando con alguna pieza de doble sentido aceptable en boca de alguien que parecía ser extranjera.
Hildegarde, tan contenida y sugerente que Walter Winchell la consideraba una Greta Garbo de la canción, fue la intérprete favorita de Ira Gershwin, Noël Coward, Cole Porter y otros grandes autores que preferían escuchar sus obras tal como habían sido imaginadas, sin el preciosismo vocal de las sopranos de Broadway ni las libertades que las cantantes de jazz acostumbraban tomarse en nombre de la improvisación.
Pero la música no era lo único en los shows de Hildegarde, que hubiera adoptado feliz el lema "antes muerta que sencilla". Su nombre se inmortalizó por hacer un espectáculo desmesurado de la elegancia según la entendían los comensales para quienes actuaba, entrando en el salón a oscuras, dejándose perseguir por spots de color hasta llegar a su banqueta dorada, ataviada por improbables modistas italianos, con guantes hasta el codo diseñados por Adrian que no se quitaba ni para tocar el piano y se convirtieron en parte de su personalidad, igual que los grandes pañuelos de seda que agitaba para despedirse. No por nada Liberace la consideraba su principal inspiración.
