The Future Is Unwritten
La banda de sonido de la película de Julien Temple sobre la vida de Joe Strummer pinta una personalidad mucho más compleja y multidimensional que la del “señor de la guerra” del punk rock, como él mismo quería ser llamado. Podríamos dividir el álbum en dos partes: por un lado, el propio Strummer en su programa radial de la BBC World Service, presentando algunos de sus intérpretes y canciones favoritas. Estos incluyen perlas de diversas épocas y estilos, desde folk y rock & roll (Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley), hasta el reggae de U-Roy, pasando por la música colombiana de Andrés Landeros y la magnífica versión de “Rock the Casbah” del argelino Rachid Taha. Por otro lado, hay temas pertenecientes a todas las etapas de la carrera de Joe, incluyendo rarezas e inéditos: los 101ers (su mítico grupo previo a Clash), música que realizó para bandas de sonido (como solista y con la banda Latino Rockabilly War, con influencias de folclore latinoamericano), y The Mescaleros, su último grupo. También, por supuesto, están los Clash: demos de “White Riot” y “I’m So Bored with the u.s.a.” muestran toda la crudeza de los primitivos punk rockers, y un tema en vivo previamente inédito, “(In the) Pouring Rain”, permite revalorizar hasta la última época de la banda.
