Falleció el compositor Roberto García Morillo
Se destacó por su labor como músico, docente y crítico
Provoca un vacío doloroso en el círculo musical argentino la muerte del compositor, periodista y docente Roberto García Morillo, ocurrida anteayer en esta ciudad, a los 92 años. Nacido en Buenos Aires, el 22 de enero de 1911, García Morillo era presidente honorario de la Asociación Argentina de Compositores y perteneció a una de las primeras promociones del Conservatorio Nacional de Música y Arte Escénico, donde estudió con maestros de la talla de Floro Ugarte (armonía), José Gil (contrapunto), José André (composición) y Constantino Gaito (orquestación) y, en París, con el célebre pianista Ives Nat.
El colega Rodolfo Arizaga escribió en 1971, en su "Enciclopedia de la música argentina" y con acertado criterio analítico, que García Morillo era "una de las personalidades más originales de su generación. No participa de las anteriores en la búsqueda de un lenguaje musical argentino y procura el propio con prescindencia de gustos ajenos y compromisos de moda. Esto le permitió una saludable honestidad artística que lo condujo a través de una cuantiosa producción, sellada por toques y giros personales que lo identifican característicamente. Lo español le proporcionó una motivación de fondo que canalizó a través de un refinado arcaísmo, cuya frecuentación le deparó obras de primera magnitud, como su cantata «Marín», uno de sus logros más definitivos. Pero ya antes de decidirse a asumir esta orientación que tanto lo identifica y tan alto lo ubica en la producción musical americana, había manifestado estos intentos en una obra de juventud que lo reveló en su momento destacando su potencia musical: «Las pinturas negras de Goya». En la trayectoria de su obra en general, y por encima de las lógicas etapas que todos van superando con el tiempo, predomina en su música una tendencia a la expresión introvertida, que le hace rechazar toda exteriorización efectista y cualquier especulación con el brillo fácil y directo. Su música es en líneas generales ascética y severa, exige al oyente todo el caudal de su atención. A pesar de su natural inclinación por los temas fantásticos y esotéricos, su creación nunca roza lo meramente decorativo y apuntala sus postulados de vanguardia como ha quedado demostrado en muchos de sus últimos trabajos".
La vasta producción de García Morillo ha sido ampliamente difundida a partir de representaciones en el Teatro Colón de sus ballets, e incluso en el extranjero, tal el caso de "Usher", de 1942. Y su prestigio fue grande en el exterior, hasta tal punto que en el Festival de Música Interamericana de Washington, en 1967, se le encomendó la composición del "Divertimento para quinteto de vientos", una obra que tres años más tarde el autor instrumentó para orquesta sinfónica.
Desde 1938 hasta fines de los años 70 ejerció la crítica musical en las páginas de LA NACION, diario con el que siguió colaborando durante la década del 80. También publicó artículos con regularidad en revistas especializadas argentinas y extranjeras. En ese sentido se recuerdan sus trabajos en Modern Music y Musical Courier, ambas de Nueva York. También editó varios libros, como "Mussorgsky" (1943); "Rimsky Korsakoff" (1945); "Estudios sobre danza" (1948, en colaboración con Dora Kriner); "Siete músicos europeos" (1949), en el que realizó un minucioso análisis de algunos elevados exponentes de la música contemporánea; "Estudio sobre música argentina", y "Carlos Chávez" (1960), un estudio fundamental de la obra de este compositor mexicano.
Además de numerosas distinciones otorgadas por entidades privadas y públicas recibió el Premio Nacional de las Artes, de 1983, por el conjunto de su catálogo, y fue Primer Premio de Música de la Secretaría de Cultura de la Nación, por su ópera "El caso Maillard, estrenada por el Teatro Colón en 1977 y repuesta en 1986.
A partir de 1942 ejerció la cátedra en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música y Arte Escénico, del que llegó a ser rector y donde dictó composición, un tema que también desarrolló en el Conservatorio Municipal Manuel de Falla, de Buenos Aires. De su inmensa producción es posible destacar sólo algunas de sus creaciones. De las escénicas: "Usher", mimodrama Op. 8, de 1941; "Harrild" (1941, ballet); "Moriana" (1957/1958, cantata coreográfica, para solos, coro y orquesta); "La máscara y el rostro" (1963, concierto coreográfico, para piano y orquesta); "Tungasuka" (1963, música incidental para la obra homónima de Bernardo Canal Feijóo); "Argentina 1860", una suite sinfónica sobre temas de Ignacio Alvarez, y "Décima cantata" ("Tango de Plata", aún no estrenada, de 1987.
En el terreno instrumental se destacan su "Concierto" (1937/1939, piano), "El Tamarit" (1953, cantata de cámara, para soprano, barítono y orquesta) sobre textos de Federico García Lorca, "Romances del amor y la muerte" (1959, bajo), "Música para oboe y orquesta" (1962). Su obra, dedicada a la música de cámara y al piano, es igualmente rica y en ella se destacan "Cuarteto" (1935/1937, piano, violín, violonchelo y clarinete); "Las pinturas negras de Goya" (1939, piano, violín, violonchelo, flauta, clarinete y fagot); "Divertimento sobre temas de Paul Klee" (1967, quinteto de vientos) y, específicamente para el piano, "Cuentos para niños traviesos" (1932), entre otras creaciones.
Los restos de García Morillo fueron inhumados ayer, en el panteón de Sadaic, en el cementerio de la Chacarita.
