Hay formas efectivas de lograrlo. Formas concientes y muchas veces obligadas, o no, formas automáticas, sorpresivas: dirigirse a ese lugar escondido bajo capas y capas de impostada seriedad, la ridícula condición de una madurez correctamente alcanzada. Una cajita oxidada conserva un único resabio de inocencia; llegar no es complejo, la dificultad radica encontrar la voluntad de querer volver a sentir la simpleza, la feliz ingenuidad de lo que ya no somos ni seremos. Como siempre (y para eso estamos acá, pero ya parece que vamos perdiendo las fuerzas, nos repetimos, desperdiciamos letras y músicas), un tema, un sonido particular, una melodía vocal, un riff, un coreo, un shalalá, cumple con esta función retro o introspectiva.
Así, el hecho de que hoy escuchemos la versión de "Mercy" de Counting Crows –que formará parte del disco de covers que la banda californiana lanzará en abril-, nos obliga a volver a su álbum debut, a ese tema que escuchamos durante la totalidad de los noventa y más y que actúa como cápsula de tiempo y nostalgia. August and Everything After fue producido por T-Bone Burnett en 1993: la reminiscencia clásica con fuertes influencias Springsteen, Van Morrison, Petty (blá) en su rock alternativo, y en la voz de Adam Duritz, representada en un trabajo que perdura latente en algún rincón de nuestras rockolas mentales.
Con respecto a lo nuevo: "Mercy" pertenece a Tender Mercies (cuya agrupación está conformada por Dan Vickrey y Jim Bogios, miembros de Counting Crows), una balada sureña que conformará el listado junto a covers de otros grandes como Teenage Fanclub, Fairport Convention, Dylan, Big Star ,Gram Parsons, los Faces y más.
