Un incorregible que resultó superdotado
Sólo los fanáticos de Los incorregibles (Claude Zidi), aquella estudiantina cómica que tuvo extraordinario éxito entre nosotros al despuntar los 80, recordarán que era Daniel Auteuil quien encarnaba a Bebel, todo un campeón a la hora de concebir fechorías y reprobar exámenes. Muchos otros lo habrán descubierto seis años después, bajo el aspecto repulsivo del codicioso Ugolin de Jean de Florette y de su secuela, Manon del manantial, de Claude Berri. Auteuil había pasado de la humorada al drama rural con la misma naturalidad con que desde hacía tiempo pasaba en la escena del musical (Godspell) a la sátira poética (La loca de Chaillot) o el drama según Edward Bond (Early Morning). Había ejercitado desde temprano esa ductilidad. Familiarizado con la vida artística (pues sus padres eran cantantes líricos y fue durante una de sus giras cuando él nació en Argel, en 1950), creció en Aviñón, sede del famoso festival: era casi inevitable que, tras completar el secundario, eligiera la opereta para iniciarse en el quehacer artístico. Por mucho que lo intentó, nunca pudo ingresar en el Conservatorio Nacional de Arte Dramático, pero, en cambio, logró incorporarse, a los 20 años, al Teatro Nacional Popular, de Jean Vilar. El cine llegó cinco años después.

Ni siquiera figuraba en los créditos cuando hizo su primera aparición, al lado de Catherine Deneuve y Jean-Louis Trintigant en L’agression, un drama de Gérard Pirès. El paso siguiente, con el mismo director, fue una comedia sobre las desventuras de un equipo de filmación durante el rodaje de una película porno, Attention les yeux!. Así, seguiría pasando de un género a otro, y así se hizo famoso: con el humor de Los incorregibles y el drama de Jean de Florette. A esta altura, no son pocos los que lo consideran el más grande actor de Francia, y es fácil entender por qué. No hay muchos -salvo, quizá, Gérard Depardieu, con quien compartió un memorable duelo actoral en El muelle (Olivier Marchal, 2004)- los que pueden exhibir semejante cantidad de labores brillantes. Unas pocas servirían de ejemplo: el luthier introvertido y esquivo de Un corazón en invierno (Claude Sautet, 1991); el hermano retraído de Catherine Deneuve en Mi estación preferida (André Téchiné, 1992); Enrique de Navarra, futuro Enrique IV de Francia, aquel para el cual "París bien vale una misa" en La reina Margot (Patrice Chéreau, 1993); el torturado policía de MR73 (Marchal, 2008). Pero hay más: La viuda de Saint Pierre, El adversario, Caché, El jardinero. Suele brillar más en los dramas (aunque se recuerden bien comedias como El placard o El restaurante), pero ahora que se decidió a dirigir -en estos días rueda una remake de La Fille du puisatier, de Marcel Pagnol, y asume el papel que Raimú hacía en el original al lado de Fernandel-, ha elegido el humor. El sabrá por qué.
