La naturaleza tan temida: en el nuevo cine catástrofe, los villanos somos nosotros
Dum dum dum dum. El mar parece tranquilo pero esa musiquita indica una amenaza: desde abajo del agua, la cámara se va acercando a la mujer que se baña despreocupada en el mar. La música sube su intensidad. La cámara subacuática se va acercando a las piernas de la bañista. De pronto, desde la superficie se ve cómo la mujer empieza a ser tironeada hacia las profundidades por una fuerza que ya no va a soltarla.
Esta famosa escena de Tiburón retrata la potencia de un horror que surge de la naturaleza. El animal marino tiene algo de monstruo sobrenatural, en especial por la forma en que el director, Steven Spielberg, lo mantiene fuera de la vista del espectador durante buena parte de la película, convirtiéndolo en una amenaza difícil de medir.
La fuerza irrefrenable de la naturaleza es un elemento crucial en el cine para generar tensión y terror en el público. Desde las películas que se concentran en catástrofes climáticas, como Terremoto, El día después de mañana y 2012, hasta las que enfrentan a los protagonistas con animales con fuerza casi sobrenatural (como sucede en Los pájaros, King Kong, El cocodrilo y Anaconda) todas tienen como fuente el miedo a esa naturaleza que los seres humanos no puede dominar por completo y que puede volverse contra ellos, en especial cuando se la ha descuidado, contaminado o alterado más allá de toda solución.
En la era del cambio climático, Infierno en la tormenta, que llega hoy a las salas locales, aprovecha todas las posibilidades de estos subgéneros (catástrofe climática, amenaza animal) que definen la confrontación del ser humano con la naturaleza. El director Alexandre Aja es un realizador especializado en terror que encontró un marco ideal para el género en esta historia en la que un huracán y varios cocodrilos ponen en riesgo la vida de una joven y su padre.
Todo comienza cuando Haley (Kaia Scodelario) va a buscar a su padre (Barry Pepper), mientras un huracán se acerca a la zona de Florida en la que viven. La relación entre ambos, que fue muy cercana cuando era chica y él la entrenaba en natación, se ha deteriorado tras el divorcio de los padres. Como el hombre no atiende el teléfono, Haley deja su bronca de lado y decide ir a buscarlo. Cuando ya la tormenta está azotando la zona, lo encuentra en una especie de sótano de la casa familiar, herido. Mientras el agua sigue entrando por los costados, padre e hija tienen que encontrar la forma de salir de ahí antes de ahogarse, pero deben evitar a los dos enormes cocodrilos que intentarán comérselos.
Una premisa con dos amenazas tan potentes suena delirante y hay una clara conciencia en el film del material con el que está trabajando. El nivel de delirio sólo va en aumento a medida que se desarrolla la historia y los peligros se van intensificando. Pero el trabajo de puesta en escena de Aja consigue que la tensión y el ritmo de la película dejen en segundo lugar a la plausibilidad de lo que cuenta. El film "recluta" enseguida al espectador como simpatizante del equipo padre-hija y lo lleva en un viaje muy entretenido, a toda velocidad, por los obstáculos que van encontrando.
Sharknado, un fenómeno curioso
La solemnidad no se suele llevar bien con este tipo de cine y el humor o un guiño al público ayudan a sobrellevar las exageraciones de la trama. Este es un equilibrio delicado que Infierno en la tormenta consigue, porque el objetivo de esta y otras películas del subgénero no es que el espectador se ría de todo lo que sucede. La amenaza de la naturaleza tiene que dar miedo para que funcione.
En ese sentido, es curioso el fenómeno de Sharknado. El telefilm, que planteaba su trama a partir de una serie de tornados dentro de los cuales habitaban hambrientos tiburones, es una especie de parodia del género de catástrofes naturales y animales peligrosos. Protagonizada por Tara Reid (American Pie) y el exBeverly Hills 90210, Ian Ziering, Sharknado hizo de la exageración su bandera.No hay espacio para el suspenso o el temor reales cuando la película juega con su estatus de producción barata y guión con poca verosimilitud. La primera fue un suceso porque resultaba graciosa pero en las secuelas la autoconciencia fue demasiado y lo que era algo ridículo se hizo demasiado forzado y cínico; la parodia le ganó al cine catástrofe, sin llegar a ser una maravilla como ¿Y dónde está el piloto?, que se ríe de las películas en las que el ser humano se enfrenta a otro tipo de catástrofes (como la clásica Aeropuerto).
Aún con sus limitaciones, las películas de catástrofes naturales tienen su público. En una era en la que los estudios concentran su producción en films anclados en una marca reconocible, ya sean superhéroes o videojuegos, cada año hay una nueva película que enfrenta al hombre con la naturaleza de distintas maneras. Más allá de su calidad, suelen tener suficiente éxito de taquilla como para que se sigan produciendo.
En 2015, Terremoto: La falla de San Andrés, protagonizada por Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, quedó entre las veinte más vistas del año en los Estados Unidos y recaudó más de 470 millones de dólares en la taquilla mundial; en 2016 una buena película como Miedo profundo, dirigida por Jaume Collet Serra y protagonizada por Blake Lively, llegó a los casi 120 millones de dólares en la taquilla internacional; al año siguiente Geo-tormenta, una mezcla de ciencia ficción con parábola sobre el cambio climático, estuvo cerca de los 188 millones de dólares en todo el mundo; y en 2018, Megalodón, en la que Jason Statham se enfrenta a un tiburón gigantesco, recaudó poco más de 530 millones de dólares. Comparados con las franquicias como Star Wars o los films de Marvel, los éxitos del cine catástrofe pueden parecer módicos pero aseguran la supervivencia de estas películas.
Teniendo en cuenta que el terror suele ser bastante taquillero, la combinación de géneros parece una buena idea comercial. Aunque dejando este aspecto de lado, Aja ofreció una reflexión sobre el atractivo para el público de estos films: "Es un gran momento para hacer este tipo de películas porque son la definición de la experiencia en la sala de cine", dijo el director en una entrevista con Collider. "Ahora son las únicas películas que se las arreglan para mantenerse en las salas de cine, desafiando a las gigantes Avengers, Star Wars y otros grandes films de Disney. Hay una razón para esto. Es porque es el tipo de película que querés ver acompañado, en una pantalla enorme y meterte adentro".
La carrera de Aja comenzó en el terreno del terror, como parte del llamado "splat pack", un grupo de directores que, a principios de siglo, revolucionaron el género con films extremadamente violentos, muy sangrientos y explícitos en su crueldad. Estos realizadores, entre los que se cuentan Eli Roth y Rob Zombie, querían recuperar el espíritu del cine de terror de los 70 y 80, según ha expresado Aja. El realizador francés llamó la atención del mundo del cine con Alta tensión, estrenada en 2003, luego siguió en el género con la remake del clásico de Wes Craven The Hills Have Eyes, de 2006, y Mirrors, de 2008. Con Piraña 3D incursionó en las películas que generan terror a partir de animales que atacan a los humanos.
"Desafortunadamente, creo que el éxito proviene del hecho de que vivimos en un mundo que da mucho miedo en distintos aspectos" sostuvo Aja. "Esas películas son una forma de confrontar nuestro miedo y divertirnos al mismo tiempo. Existen en la sociedad como un espejo. Pienso que, lamentablemente, nada está mejorando, así que hay un montón de grandes películas de terror para hacer en los próximos años".
Si a lo que dice Aja le agregamos la situación de emergencia absoluta en la que se encuentra nuestro planeta, es fácil pensar por qué el ser humano querrá seguir haciendo catarsis de sus miedos a través del cine, frente a una naturaleza fuera de control.
