Murió Pol Pot, el genocida de Camboya
Entre 1975 y 1979, su régimen fue responsable de la muerte de casi dos millones de personas; creen que habría sido asesinado.
PHNOM PENH.- Pol Pot, el ex líder del Khmer Rouge que convirtió a Camboya en un vasto campo de exterminio y de concentración, murió anteanoche en una choza de la selva donde se hallaba bajo arresto domiciliario.
El cadáver de Pol Pot fue exhibido ayer ante un pequeño grupo de periodistas occidentales que pudieron ingresar en Camboya.
Pol Pot, considerado responsable del exterminio de casi dos millones de camboyanos en "campos de la muerte" durante su gobierno (1975-1979), había dicho el año último que tenía la conciencia clara. Anteanoche, a los 73 años, murió, aparentemente en paz, de un ataque al corazón.
La noticia de la muerte de Pol Pot y las imágenes del presunto cuerpo del anciano ex líder del Khmer Rouge fueron recibidas en los Estados Unidos -que querían capturarlo- con desilusión y frustración.
En el mismo momento en que la muerte de Pol Pot era anunciada, el primer ministro tailandés, Chuan Leepkpai, recibía una carta en la que el presidente norteamericano, Bill Clinton, pedía su colaboración para detener al criminal de guerra.
Entretanto, muchos interrogantes sobre su desaparición y su herencia de odio siguen abiertos.
Pedido de autopsia
Mientras el Departamento de Estado norteamericano respaldó un pedido de Camboya para efectuar una autopsia al cadáver de Pol Pot, el ex secretario de Estado Henry Kissinger se atrevió incluso a plantear la hipótesis de que el ex dictador pueda haber sido asesinado por sus antiguos camaradas.
Kissinger deslizó la idea de que habría sido asesinado por los propios khmer rouges, que lo habían sacado de la conducción para evitar que fuese procesado y que la atención del mundo se focalizara una vez más en su violenta organización.
El diplomático, al hacer referencia a la presencia norteamericana en Indochina, dijo que fue "un error" el excesivo compromiso norteamericano en Vietnam, pero defendió la decisión de bombardear Camboya, de donde partían ataques del Vietcong. "Aquella acción no tiene nada que ver con lo que ocurrió con Pol Pot en Camboya -dijo-. Sería como decir que el Holocausto fue provocado por los bombardeos británicos sobre Alemania".
En declaraciones hechas por teléfono a medios de prensa en Phnom Penh, la capital de Camboya, Non Nou, encargado de vigilar al ex gobernante, dijo que el corazón de Pol Pot dejó de latir anteayer, a las 23.15, hora local (16.15 GMT, 13.15 en la Argentina). Se hallaba en una zona del norte de Camboya, a unos dos kilómetros de la frontera con Tailandia.
"A medianoche, la esposa de Pol Pot vino a vernos. Descubrió que su marido estaba muerto cuando lo cubría con un mosquitero -dijo Non Nou-. El murió en una cabaña que le fue construida luego de que perdió el poder".
Non Nou había sido asignado para custodiar a Pol Pot, luego de que éste fue derrotado en una sangrienta lucha interna el año último.
El cadáver, expuesto ante cinco periodistas y representantes del gobierno tailandés, se encontraba recostado en una pequeña cama, en una cabaña de madera, a unos 2000 metros de la frontera entre Camboya y Tailandia. Guerrilleros adolescentes del Khmer Rouge que portaban fusiles de asalto AK-47, de origen ruso, formaban una guardia de honor en torno del cuerpo.
El cadáver, vestido con un saco pijama, con los pies cubiertos por una manta verde y rodeado de guirnaldas de flores, se parecía -según los periodistas- al de Pol Pot. Según un periodista de la cadena Worldwide Television News (WTN), tenía pantalones de tipo marinero, una camisa parecida a la que usaba durante el proceso, y el interior de la cabaña olía fuertemente a formol, líquido empleado para conservar los cuerpos.
El cadáver parecía "fresco" y no tenía signos aparentes de heridas.
Los guerrilleros guardaron silencio mientras los fotógrafos tomaban fotos y hacían apuntes. A ratos, el único ruido que se percibía era el distante tableteo de ametralladoras y artillería. Los últimos remanentes del Khmer Rouge intentaban frenar a las fuerzas gubernamentales y a ex guerrilleros que se volcaron contra los elementos más doctrinarios del grupo rebelde.
Imágenes insuficientes
El gobierno de Camboya afirmó que quería ver el cuerpo de Pol Pot para confirmar su muerte y un asesor del segundo primer ministro, Hun Sen, dijo que las imágenes de la televisión podrían ser insuficientes para probar que murió.
Un jefe del grupo guerrillero del Khmer Rouge dijo que su cremación se retrasará dos o tres días.
"Su muerte es buena para el Khmer Rouge. Espero que su mal nombre se desvanezca con su muerte", dijo a los periodistas el guerrillero, identificado como general Noun No, en la frontera nororiental de Tailandia con Camboya.
La muerte de Pol Pot revivió dolorosas memorias de muchos camboyanos que perdieron a seres queridos durante su régimen de terror.
Muchos lamentaron que el hombre que convirtió a su país en un vasto y brutal campo de trabajo se las arreglara para evadir la Justicia durante tanto tiempo.
Chey Sopheara, director del museo del genocidio de Toul Sleng, en Phnom Penh, expresó: "Yo sufrí. Mi padre, mi hermano y mi cuñado murieron durante el régimen de Pol Pot. Si Pol Pot está realmente muerto será juzgado en el infierno".
