El caso de Gosiame Thamara Sithole abrió una incógnita que tuvo en vilo al mundo. La mujer sudafricana, de 37 años, oriunda de Tembisa, cerca de Johannesburgo, aseguró haber dado a luz a 10 bebés el pasado 8 de junio. Ahora, un comunicado oficial reveló la verdad.
La protagonista de esta historia salió a hacer público que había alumbrado a un número récord de niños. Sin embargo, rápidamente se puso en duda la veracidad de su declaración cuando el padre de los chicos, Teboho Tsotetsi, señaló que nunca los había conocido.
El hombre acusó a su pareja de inventar todo a modo de estafa para ganar dinero. Posteriormente, la mujer fue internada en una clínica de salud mental de Pretoria.
El testimonio de los médicos del hospital de Tembisa aclaró un poco esta historia. Los profesionales comprobaron que la señora Sithole “no dio a luz a ningún bebé en los últimos tiempos”, y menos que menos a diez. El informe, realizado por funcionarios del gobierno local, detalló: “También se estableció que no estuvo embarazada en el último tiempo”.
Por el momento, la protagonista de esta insólita historia continúa internada en observación en el centro especializado en psiquiatría. A través de un comunicado, el gobierno provincial de Gauteng informó: “La señorita Sithole fue ingresada en el hospital de Tembisa el 18 de junio de 2021, y se le realizaron varias pruebas médicas para determinar su estado de salud”.
Y agregó: “Inicialmente, estaba previsto que permaneciera en el hospital durante 72 horas, que expiraron el martes. Tras completar su examen preliminar, sus médicos recomendaron que se la mantuviera en el hospital durante otros siete días para una mejor observación, de acuerdo con la Ley de Salud Mental”.
Asimismo, corroboró la información brindada por los médicos y consignó que no existió el embarazo múltiple informado.
La agencia de noticias que publicó la información inicial referida al parto decuple salió a disculparse por no haber chequeado correctamente la información. La novedad se volvió viral y recorrió el mundo. Luego, la información de que la mujer podría haber mentido tuvo en vilo a los usuarios. Ahora, se supo la verdad.
El director de Pretoria News, Piet Rampedi, envió un correo electrónico a su personal para decirles que sabía quién era la pareja y que no veía motivos razonables para dudar de que estuvieran diciendo la verdad. Sin embargo, afirmó: “No utilicé ninguna herramienta de investigación ni lista de control”.
En este sentido, confió: “No tenían ninguna razón para mentirme sobre el embarazo. Para mí, era una historia de celebración. Por eso, nunca exigí pruebas documentales del embarazo, como escáneres y tarjetas clínicas, por ejemplo, como haría normalmente con una historia de investigación”.
Finalmente, reconoció su error: “Sin embargo, a juzgar por el repentino giro de los acontecimientos y la reacción del gobierno y de nuestros detractores, me equivoqué”, reconoció.
