Archie Moore, el señor KO
Fue campeón mundial a los 39 años; se enfrentó con Alí y Marciano
El legendario boxeador norteamericano Archie Moore murió ayer, a los 84 años, en su casa de San Diego, pero nunca nadie se atrevió a asegurar qué día había nacido. Sólo se sabe que hace mucho tiempo, tal vez un 13 de diciembre de 1913, allá en Benoit, una parte del bravo Mississippi, que para él siempre estuvo en llamas .
No era fácil ser negro, pobre y huérfano en aquellos tiempos que devoraron casi todo para él. Hasta su identidad real de Archibald Lee Wright , consumida por la protección de sus tíos: los Moore, que con casa y comida le entregaron la protección que no pudieron otorgarle quienes le dieron la vida.
Fue dependiente y, también, convicto. Fue boxeador y campeón. Allí comenzó a ser libre , a meterse en un mundo fantástico que después de ponerle mil trabas le rindió millones de pleitesías.
No era sencillo empezar a boxear en 1936; fue maravilloso ser campeón mundial mediopesado en 1952 , ante Joey Maxim, tras estar cinco años en lista de espera por el pecado de ser calificado como retador peligroso .
Su estilo, de ataque constante con quiebre de cintura, lento, pero catedrático, parece imborrable. Como lo serán, por siempre, aquellas diez peleas que efectuó en el Río de la Plata, en 1951 y en 1953.
Los combates mundialistas se mezclan con todos sus récords: una campaña con 215 peleas, con 183 victorias, 129 por knock out, marcando la contundencia máxima en un campeón mundial. Completan la historia 22 derrotas, nueve empates y un match nulo.
Boxeó hasta 1963 y se retiró con casi 50 años. Su jerarquía fue absoluta y siempre fue buscado para derrocar al campeón mundial de los pesados, aunque ya estuviese viejo y fuese físicamente chico.
Poco importaba; el viejo Moore era bueno y podía ganarle a todos. Por eso desafió a Rocky Marciano y, después de derribarlo, perdió por KO en 1955.
Tampoco importaba si Floyd Patterson , a los 21 años, era veloz. Archie Moore tenía el derecho de probarlo y a perder por el título en 1956.
Como semipesado era imbatible y, sin dudas, en esa categoría fue el más grande de todos los tiempos. Sus peleas dramáticas se transformaban en cuentos, cuando salidos del relato de Buck Canel para la Cabalgata Deportiva recorrían el mundo.
Siempre fue el Viejo para la gente del boxeo. Porque no tuvo problemas de desafiar, con 48 años a cuestas, a Cassius Clay , y darle buen trabajo antes de perder por knock out.
Fue divo y maestro en un tiempo notable del boxeo, donde sólo él, junto con Sandy Saddler, Willie Pep, Ray Robinson o Rocky Marciano podían lucir coronas y ser nombrados campeones.
Amó el boxeo y todas las aventuras del ring. Proyectó a George Foreman al primer título mundial y lo acompañó al corazón del Africa para estar en su esquina cuando Muhammad Ali lo pulverizó en ocho rounds, en 1974.
Moore fue el boxeo. Impuso la sabiduría por cualquier postergación. Llevó su arte por el mundo. Lo exhibió en el Luna Park, con Perón, Evita y el país en el ring side, dando vida a uno de los hechos más emotivos que vivió el deporte del Río de la Plata: su pelea con el uruguayo Dogomar Martínez, que ganó por puntos en 1953.
En junio último, este cronista asistió al museo del Hall de la Fama, en Canastota, Nueva York, buscando una nota esperada con Moore, quien sufrió un ataque cardíaco al bajar del avión. Supimos entonces que sería muy difícil que el Viejo festejase su cumpleaños Nº 85. Y nos quedamos con las ganas de conocer los secretos de una maravilla del ring. Unica e incomparable.
Era el preferido
Archie Moore no sólo sedujo por su estilo o por su contundencia, sino también por su generosidad con la gente de bajo recursos. Esas actitudes y, naturalmente, el hecho de haber estado dos veces en la Argentina -en 1951 y, ya campeón mundial, en 1953- lo convirtió en el preferido de Evita .
Su primera visita a nuestro país ocurrió cuando la corona mundial era una de sus aspiraciones: hizo siete peleas en 1951 (en el Luna Park, en Córdoba, Tucumán y Bahía Blanca), además de protagonizar otro combate en Montevideo.
De todas ellas se recuerda, con mayor nitidez, el rotundo knock-out ante Alberto Lovell, en el primer round.
Vino aquí por segunda vez en 1953 y realizó dos peleas -sin el título en juego- frente a Rinaldo Ansaloni (KOT en el 4º asalto) y el inolvidable match ante el uruguayo Dogomar Martínez , a quien derribó varias veces, pero sin poder noquearlo.
Con Martínez se reencontraron 40 años después , en Montevideo.
