Noruega refuerza apoyo al Fondo Amazonía en Brasil
Noruega reforzó este miércoles su apoyo al fondo de financiamiento internacional para proteger la Amazonía y dijo que ayudará a Brasil a buscar nuevos donantes, durante una visita de su ministro de Medio Ambiente, Espen Barth Eide, a Brasilia.
Noruega aporta más del 90% de los recursos del Fondo Amazonía, destinado a financiar proyectos de preservación ambiental en la selva tropical brasileña.
Pero, al igual que Alemania, interrumpió su cooperación en 2019 debido a la falta de compromiso del expresidente ultraderechista Jair Bolsonaro con la protección de la floresta.
"Tenemos 15 años de historia trabajando juntos (...) Queremos continuar por ese camino", dijo Barth Eide a periodistas tras reunirse con la ministra brasileña de Medio Ambiente, Marina Silva.
Barth Eide aseguró que Noruega viene trabajando junto al nuevo gobierno, incluso desde antes de que entrara en funciones, para "descongelar rápidamente" los fondos y que esto ya "ha ocurrido".
"Las instituciones están en su lugar y el fondo continúa funcionando (...) Continuaremos con nuestro apoyo y estamos intentando movilizar también a otros donantes para que se sumen", afirmó el ministro noruego.
De acuerdo con Marina Silva, el fondo cuenta con más de 3.000 millones de reales (USD 576 millones al cambio actual) disponibles para financiar proyectos que ya habían sido aprobados y otros nuevos, con especial foco en los pueblos indígenas y el combate a la deforestación.
El izquierdista Lula da Silva prometió tras su victoria que haría todo lo posible para erradicar la deforestación ilegal en la Amazonía para 2030.
De regreso al poder en enero, movilizó a las agencias de protección ambiental, relanzó un programa nacional de protección de la selva y retomó el diálogo internacional en busca de apoyo.
En enero recibió en Brasilia al canciller alemán, Olaf Scholz, quien anunció que su país estaba dispuesto a contribuir con 200 millones de euros -unos 210 millones de dólares- para el Fondo Amazonía.
Silva se reunió este mes con John Kerry, enviado especial para el clima de Estados Unidos, quien reafirmó el deseo de Washington de aportar al Fondo Amazonía.
Según la ministra, Francia y España también "indicaron" su interés en contribuir.
Bajo la administración de Bolsonaro, un aliado de la agroindustria y negacionista del cambio climático, la deforestación anual promedio en la Amazonía brasileña aumentó 75,5% con respecto a la década anterior.
Los datos oficiales revelan que el gobierno actual tiene un gran desafío por delante.
Tras una caída de 61% en enero, la deforestación en la Amazonía en febrero (322 km2) aumentó 62% respecto a febrero de 2022, un récord para ese mes del año.
