BRUSELAS -- El presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, y otros líderes mundiales inician en Bruselas la primera de un trío de cumbres centradas en presionar a Rusia para que ponga fin a la guerra en Ucrania.
La capital diplomática europea alberga una cumbre de emergencia de la OTAN, además de un encuentro de los líderes del Grupo de los Siete y otro de los 27 de la Unión Europea. Biden asistirá a las tres.
Biden y los demás mandatarios iniciaron la jornada con una foto grupal antes de la reunión, que se espera que dure varias horas.
El secretario general de la OTAN, Jens Stoltenberg, inició la cumbre señalando que la Alianza está decidida a seguir aumentando la presión a Rusia.

BRUSELAS — Los líderes de la OTAN rechazan descartar represalias contra Rusia si lanza un ataque con armas químicas contra Ucrania, pero el primer ministro de Gran Bretaña, Boris Johnson, cree que Moscú ha ido ya demasiado lejos.
“La realidad es que (el presidente) Vladimir Putin ha cruzado ya la línea roja hacia la barbarie", dijo Johnson a reporteros el jueves, a su llegada a una cumbre de líderes de la Alianza.
Según el mandatario británico “ahora le corresponde a la OTAN considerar la espantosa crisis en Ucrania, el espantoso sufrimiento del pueblo ucraniano y ver qué más se puede ayer para ayudar a la población a protegerse”.
Como organización, la OTAN no está enviando armas a Ucrania. La Alianza de 30 naciones se niega a desplegar soldados en el país, bien en misión de combate o de paz, y ha dicho que no enviará aviones para proteger a la población o patrullar una zona de exclusión aérea.
Pero sus socios sí mandan armas y ayuda, ya sea de forma individual o en grupo.
El primer ministro de Bélgica, Alexander De Croo, describe a Putin como “un líder ruso que ha perdido el sentido de lo razonable estos días". Además, advirtió que “si se usan armas químicas u otra cosa, esto tendría definitivamente graves consecuencias".
Ningún líder de la OTAN ha ofrecido más detalles al respecto.

PARÍS — Renault anuncia la suspensión de la “actividad de la planta de Renault Moscú” con efecto inmediato.
La decisión se anunció el miércoles en la noche, horas después de que el presidente de Ucrania, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, pidiese en una intervención virtual ante el parlamento de Francia que la automotriz y otras empresas francesas con presencia en Rusia dejasen de respaldar la guerra contra su país.
La junta directiva de Renault Group se reunió el miércoles para decidir parar la actividad en la planta que produce los modelos Arkana, Kaptur, Duster y los SUV Nissan Terrano, ante las crecientes críticas por su presencia en la Federación Rusa.
Pero parte de su actividad en el país pasa por su filial AvtoVAZ, que el año pasado vendió cerca de 500.000 vehículos allí. Según Renault, AvtoVAZ no parará de inmediato, pero está “evaluando las opciones disponibles, teniendo el cuenta la situación actual, mientras actúa de forma responsable hacia sus 45.000 trabajadores en Rusia”.

BRUSELAS — El secretario general de la OTAN, Jens Stoltenberg, dice que cualquier ataque químico de Rusia contra Ucrania cambiaría el curso de la guerra, pero no aclara si la Alianza tomaría acciones militares.
Preguntado por si un ataque con armas químicas es una línea roja para la OTAN, Stoltenberg afirmó: “No especularé más allá del hecho de que la OTAN siempre está preparada para defender, proteger y reaccionar ante cualquier tipo de ataque a un país aliado de la OTAN".
“Cualquier uso de armas químicas cambiaría fundamentalmente la naturaleza del conflicto. Sería una flagrante violación de la ley internacional y tendría consecuencias severas y generalizadas”, apuntó Stoltenberg el jueves a su llegada a la sede de la OTAN en Bruselas para una cumbre en la que participarán los 30 líderes de la Alianza, incluyendo el presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden.
Los aliados están preocupados por la retórica rusa y temen que Moscú quiera crear un pretexto para emplear armas químicas en Ucrania. Los líderes podrían acordar el envío de equipos para ayudar al país a protegerse de las amenazas químicas, biológicas, radiológicas y nucleares.
Además, está previsto que aprueben la creación de cuando nuevos grupos de combate multinacionales en el este de Europa para disuadir a Rusia de atacar a los miembros de la Alianza.

LEÓPOLIS, Ucrania — La Marina de Ucrania reporta la destrucción del Orsk, un gran buque de desembarco ruso, cerca de la ciudad portuaria de Berdiansk.
El breve comunicado en Facebook iba acompañado de imágenes y videos del incendio y de espesas columnas de humo en el puerto.
El ejército ruso no comentó lo sucedido en la embarcación.
Berdiansk está bajo el control de las tropas de Moscú desde el 27 de febrero.
