Legisladores eeuu llaman a fortalecer protección de periodistas en méxico
Ciudad de méxico, 8 feb (reuters) - legisladores estadounidenses pidieron el martes al gobierno de méxico que intensifique la protección de los periodistas en el país y calificaron de "inadecuados" los esfuerzos actuales después de que cuatro trabajadores de los medios fueran asesinados en lo que va del año.
Los senadores estadounidenses Tim Kaine y Marco Rubio también solicitaron en una carta al secretario de Estado estadounidense, Antony Blinken, un papel más importante de su nación para presionar a México para que tome medidas más enérgicas.
"Escribimos para expresar nuestra profunda preocupación por los continuos asesinatos de periodistas en México y para buscar una mayor comprensión de los esfuerzos de Estados Unidos en apoyo a la libertad de prensa en el país", dijeron los legisladores.
Solo el mes pasado, hombres armados mataron a José Gamboa en el estado Veracruz, en el sureste del país, a Margarito Martínez y Lourdes Maldonado en la norteña ciudad fronteriza Tijuana y a Roberto Toledo en el estado occidental Michoacán.
Kaine y Rubio expresaron su preocupación por la impunidad en México y criticaron al presidente mexicano, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, por arremeter públicamente contra la prensa que critica a su administración.
"La violencia que ha ocurrido por años contra periodistas en México no puede comenzar a disminuir mientras que el líder del país continúe normalizando la hostilidad hacia la libertad de expresión", sostuvieron.
De 2000 a la fecha, la organización de protección al gremio, Artículo 19, ha documentado 149 asesinatos de periodistas en México, 29 de los cuales han ocurrido durante el mandato de López Obrador. (Reporte de Daina Beth Solomon; Traducido por Noé Torres)
